Col 3:2 “Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.”

In today’s world there are many items which works automatically when once set.  Washing machines can be set for cotton, silk, quick wash items. Iron box can be set for cotton, linen, silk etc..Mixy, fan all can be set on 1, 2, 3 as we wish.

Here Paul asks us to set our mind on things that are above. Above means things that are of heaven. In order to make it more clear, he adds,

Set your mind….” not on the things that are on the earth”.

What are the things of heaven?

1 Cor  2:9  “But as it is written, “Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these God has prepared for those who love him.”

We will have many surprises when we reach heaven.

  1. People whom we meet there. Those whom the world would have ignored; perhaps a servant while a master whom he was serving missing.

I met one boy Abraham, (studying 8th std) yesterday who had come all the way from Yercaud to Madurai to attend the RUB meeting. He was possessed by evil spirit a month back. He narrated his testimony how Jesus delivered him.

After the meeting, when everybody got dispersed, he came rushing to me, telling,

“Sister, I have something more to tell you.

“Three things”. 1st week when I came to pray (in the house church) I saw Jesus. I could not see his face. It was so bright.  I could not look at him.

2nd week, Jesus came to me. I held his legs tight.

3rd week, I asked him for a cycle. Within 2 days I got a cycle.”

Those who walked and lived with Jesus like this will be seen there.

  1. The throne which is described in Rev. 4.
  2. The Lamb slain.

4  Angels  singing and worshiping in the heavenly choir.

Let us set our minds on these things that are of heaven! They are permanent and everlasting. Let’s be careful not to set our mind on things that are of the earth and spend life in worry, anxiety and fear.

I know a sister whose son and daughter both didn’t have children. When someone asks, with a smile always on her face she will say, “God will give in the appropriate time.” After 10 years of marriage, finally her son got a child.

Still the daughter was waiting. Her smile did not fade. Now after 2 years, exactly 10th year of her marriage, her daughter also conceived and is awaiting delivery. I could witness the mind and face of a person who has not set her mind on things that are on the earth.

Countdown to Red Heifer
                          

After years of hard work and preparation, the rabbi charged with overseeing the red heifer claims that this Biblical commandment is on the verge of reappearing. Rabbi Azariah Ariel goes on record, explaining how the return of this ritual of purification will, and will not, change our lives.

The Temple Institute in Jerusalem has been working for three decades to educate the public and make practical steps to prepare for the Third Temple. After many years of research and work, they are close to bringing about an essential element: the Red Heifer. If they are successful, implementing the red heifer ritual will not only have implications for the Temple service but will also help Jews observe other commandments in a more complete manner.

The commandment of the red heifer is described by the sages as the most inexplicable of any in the Torah. Yet lacking a red heifer has left all of Israel ritually impure and unable to properly perform many other commandments. The Temple Institute in Jerusalem has tasked Rabbi Ariel with supervising the effort to reestablish this essential Torah commandment. As such, Rabbi Ariel is precise in his description of the commandment including its present-day implications.

“The Torah commands us to perform the mitzvah (Torah commandment) in order to be in a ritually pure condition,” Rabbi Ariel explained to Breaking Israel News. “This is necessary for us to engage in anything that is holy or sanctified. It is important to understand that impurity is not any type of physical dirt or something. For most ritual impurities, bathing in a mikveh (ritual bath) is sufficient. 

The highest level of impurity comes from contact with the dead and to purify this condition, the ashes of the red heifer are required. This condition comes not only from contact with the dead but to be under the same roof as a dead body also brings about this severe level of ritual impurity. This can typically happen if a person is inside a hospital in which a dead body is present. In such cases, the ashes of the red heifer are the only method for becoming ritually pure. Lacking the ashes of the red heifer, this condition remains forever.”

The physical requirements for a red heifer are simple yet precise. This has led to an intense search for an exceedingly rare candidate.

“We know that there have been nine red heifers throughout history, the first having been prepared in the times of Moses and Elazar, the son of Aaron,” Ariel explained. “A red heifer is a female cow that is red. In the language of the Bible, red is not exclusively what we know today as red. It also includes brown and other similar shades of red. This excludes black. All of the hairs on its body must be the same color.”

The rabbi described a recent case in which a calf was found to have six white hairs near its nose which rendered it unfit.

“The animal must also be two years old. There can be no blemish, no holes in the ear. Until that point, it is considered a calf and not a cow. At that point, the cow can be slaughtered and prepared.”

Though reinstating the Temple service in its entirety is dependent on the return of the red heifer ritual, the ashes of the red heifer are prepared outside of the Temple.

“This is not a sacrifice per se so it is burned in an area outside of the Temple, on the Mount of Olives. The ashes are collected. A tiny bit of the ashes are mixed with spring water and can be sprinkled on people in order to purify them.”

Only a tiny bit of the ashes are required for the purification ritual so one heifer will suffice for all of the Jews.

“If properly prepared, one heifer is sufficient to purify the entire nation. There is no limit on how much wood can be burned with the heifer. Those ashes are also used to purify people. A tiny amount of ash, a few milligrams, can be mixed with a large quantity of water. In this manner, one heifer can indeed purify the entire nation.”

“Even after the destruction of the Second Temple, ashes remained hidden away in different places, and were used to purify the Jews,” Rabbi Ariel said.

But the return of the red heifer ritual will affect everyday life for Jews.

“The lack of ashes from the red heifer has prevented us from performing many Torah commandments,” Ariel explained. “For example, today, when a Jew makes bread, they separate out a small amount for the mitzvah of hafrashat challah (separating out a quantity of dough for the priests). Today, the dough is disposed of. This is done because of the ritual impurity of the person making the dough and of the Kohanim (Jewish men of the priestly caste). 

If we can reinstate the ritual of the red heifer, this dough can be baked and given to the Kohanim to eat. This baked product is one of the 24 Divinely ordained gifts designated for the kohanim. There are many commandments like this that we are unable to perform due to the lack of the ashes of the red heifer.

“The ashes of the red heifer are not necessary exclusively for Temple-related commandments. This will enable the complete performance of many mitzvoth we already do today.”

Many believe that the search for the red heifer is motivated by a desire to hasten the arrival of the Messiah but Rabbi Ariel stated emphatically that this is not the case.

“There is a great misconception concerning the red heifer,” Rabbi Ariel said. “Some people believe that by reinstating the ritual of the red heifer, we will bring the Messiah or reinstate the Temple service. This is an incorrect understanding. God does not do my bidding. We do His bidding. 

The Jews were given the Torah and commanded to do the mitzvoth. It is not our intention to bring about a divine reaction through the red heifer. Our only interest is to perform the mitzvoth as they were given. The red heifer is a commandment so we perform it. It will allow us to perform other mitzvoth. Other than that, there are no expectations or additional agenda.”

Ariel told Breaking Israel News that there are two calves that may potentially be used in for the preparation of the ashes. They are currently being raised in an undisclosed location under special conditions. Care must be taken that they are not scarred or blemished and they must remain separated from bulls.

“As per the Torah requirements, it is forbidden that any yoke or burden be placed on them. When the calves reach two years of age, they will be checked again to ensure that the color has not changed and that they have no blemishes.”

“We are working on this but the most important thing we can do is to keep their location secret. If we succeed, in two years we will be permitted to perform more mitzvoth in the manner God commanded.”

Local Council Bans Prayer or Counseling Outside London Abortion Center

A local council in a borough of southwest London has passed a vote to set up a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) around a BPAS abortion clinic. The protection order put in place will ban pro-life vigils and protests “with respect to issues related to abortion services, by any means” wrote the Independent.

The Richmond Council’s unanimous decision to introduce the PSPO around the Twickenham clinic prevents the “peaceful pro-life prayer vigils” normally held by the Good Counsel Network, according to Life News.

In addition to protests, attempts to provide counseling support to women visiting the center will be banned, “along with ‘any form’ of interaction with residents, road users or BPAS staff if it relates to terminations, according to a draft document,” reported the Independent.

This ban spreads across six roads surrounding the clinic to create a buffer zone in areas where Richmond Council says protest has grown in recent years. Positive and negative feelings have been reported by women who have attended the clinic. Many have said to have felt judged and targeted by the manner of protest occurring, while others have received support after handed leaflets, and decided not to end their pregnancies.

Some of these women gave testimonies to the council, expressing their “dismay” that the introduction of a censorship zone will prevent “vulnerable women from receiving information about help and support available to them,” as Be Here For Me explained in a press release.

“I told the council my story, but they have not listened,” said a mother who testified to Richmond Council. “I told them that when I met the group outside the abortion centre in Richmond, it was the first time that I felt I had a choice. But now the PSPO means that offering the help I received outside the centre is a crime.”

With the passing of this order, Richmond becomes the second council to us a PSPO to stop people praying and offering women help outside an abortion clinic after Ealing enacted a PSPO last April.

Liberty, an independent human rights advocacy organization in the UK, along with other organizations, has raised concerns that the orders, both at Richmond and Ealing, have been too broad and vague to “render it proportionate,” as it is now a criminal offense to make “any offer of help” to women on Rosslyn Road, and “directed” prayer and council is banned.

A member of the Good Counsel Network, Clare McCullough, told the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) that she offered to limit the vigil to one person with a leaflet offering to help, with “no praying and no placards.” She was told, however, this would be “too distressing for clients and staff.”

The Man Who Was Not Allowed to Board Flight 302: ‘Say Thank You to God’

 “When I arrived, boarding was closed and I watched the last passengers in (the) tunnel go in. I screamed to put me in but they didn’t allow it.” 

This is how a Greek passenger named Antonis Mavropoulos described his attempt to board Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 last Sunday morning.

He was not allowed to board the next flight to Nairobi after the airline lost contact with the flight he was supposed to take. He says that a security staff member “told me gently not to protest and say thank you to God, because I am the only passenger who did not enter the flight.” 

Antonis Mavropoulos has abundant reason to “say thank you to God” today. What about those who lost someone on the airplane he tried to board? 

The 157 victims of Flight 302 were a small percentage of the 153,424 people who die every day around the world. But the sudden shock of their deaths made their loss especially tragic. 

Is the Christian faith truly relevant at a time like this? 

IS GOD A CLOCKMAKER? 

One of the finest pastors in America, a dear friend of mine, lost his oldest son recently. As the father of two and grandfather of four, I cannot begin to imagine his pain. Or that of the families grieving over the Ethiopian airline tragedy. 

At times like this, grief can turn us from God in bitterness and disappointment. If he’s our loving Father, why does he allow his children to suffer so terribly? 

Or grief can turn us toward God in faith and hope. Since he’s our loving Father, won’t he help us through these days of despair and pain? 

Nothing about the Ethiopian jet crash changed the character of God. If he loved us before, he loves us still. If he was King of the universe on Saturday, he is King on Tuesday. 

What we fear is that the tragedy reveals something about God we don’t want to believe. Perhaps he is not as loving or as powerful as we thought he was. Perhaps he is not as relevant to our lives and suffering as we believed him to be. 

Maybe he is a clockmaker watching his invention run down on its own. Or maybe he’s not there at all. 

WHEN A HAMMER CANNOT DRILL A HOLE 

The key is to understand what the Christian faith promises and what it does not. 

It is unfair to blame a hammer when it cannot drill a hole or a drill when it cannot drive a nail. Jesus never promised us that his followers would be immune from death and grief. Just the opposite: “In the world you will have tribulation,” he warned us (John 16:33). What Jesus did promise is that he will be with us “to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). He said of his followers: “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28). 

He promised that he would reward his persecuted followers: “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven” (Matthew 5:12). He promised the thief on the cross what he promises us in the moment of our death: “You will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43Philippians 1:21). 

“THE LAST OF HUMAN FREEDOMS” 

In the meantime, his Spirit is using our challenges to mold us into the character of Christ (Romans 8:29). 

In Man’s Search for Meaningholocaust survivor Viktor Frankl wrote that he and his fellow prisoners experienced “the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” He discovered that in responding to their suffering, “the sort of person the prisoner became was the result of an inner decision, and not the result of camp influences alone.” 

It is precisely here—when we must choose the “sort of person” we become—that Jesus’ presence and power are especially relevant to us. 

But there’s a catch. 

“WHY DO YOU SEEK THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD?” 

When women came to Jesus’ tomb to finish his burial, “they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus” (Luke 24:2–3). “While they were perplexed about this,” two angels appeared to them (v. 4). They asked the women, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” (v. 5). 

We are comfortable with theology (“a word about God”), less with Theo (“God” himself).

Twenty centuries after Easter, Christians can still do the same. We “seek the living among the dead” when we treat Jesus as anyone or anything other than our living Lord. When he is an idea, a theology, a model, a movement, he is as “dead” as if he were Muhammad or Buddha. When we experience him as a living person, only then do we not seek him among the dead. 

It is hard in our materialistic culture to trust that which must be known through faith rather than through experience. We understand cemeteries more than resurrections. We are comfortable with theology (“a word about God”), less with Theo (“God” himself). 

“I FEEL THE BOTTOM AND IT IS GOOD” 

What grief are you carrying for yourself or for someone you know?

Bring it to the risen and living Christ. Ask him to use it to make you more like him—more dependent on your Father (John 5:30), more obedient to his will (Matthew 26:39), and more compassionate for those who suffer (John 11:35). Then ask his Spirit to make you the presence of Jesus for someone who is hurting (1 Corinthians 12:26–27). 

And know that whatever you face, the worst is only the gateway to the best. 

Yandall Woodfin was one of my professors and mentors in seminary. His marvelous textbook, With All Your Mind: A Christian Philosophy, ends with these words: 

“It can be for any of us who trusts in Christ as it was for Christian and Hopeful in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. As they approach the river of death, which has no way around nor bridge across, they ask about the depth of the water and are told, ‘You shall find it deeper or shallower, as you believe in the King of the place.’ 

“Upon entering the water Christian begins to sink and cries to his companion that the billows and waves are going over his head. To this Hopeful responds, ‘Be of good cheer, my Brother, I feel the bottom and it is good.’ Christian soon finds solid ground to stand on and ‘the rest of the River was but shallow.’”
