HE WILL MAKE MY FEET LIKE DEER’S FEET
“The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills.Habakkuk 3:19
1.What’s happening in Habakkuk 3?
Context: Habakkuk is a prophet around 600 BC. Judah is corrupt Hab 1:2-4, and Babylon is about to invade Judah Hab 1:6. Habakkuk argues with God: “Why do You use a wicked nation to judge us?” Hab 1:13. God answers: “The just shall live by his faith” Hab 2:4. Babylon will be judged too. Hab 2:6-20, but Judah must trust God through the coming disaster.
Habakkuk 3 is Habakkuk’s prayer/song. He remembers God’s power in history Hab 3:2-15 — Exodus, Sinai, conquest. Then he trembles at the upcoming judgment Hab 3:16 “my body trembled; my lips quivered.”
But he ends with faith. Hab 3:17-18 “Though the fig tree may not blossom… yet I will rejoice in the LORD.” Verse 19 is the reason why he can rejoice when everything fails.
2.Breaking down Habakkuk 3:19
“The LORD God is my strength”
LORD God — Hebrew YHWH Adonai = “Yahweh my Master.” Personal name + Sovereign title. Not “a god.” The God.
Is my strength — Hebrew cheyli = my power, might, wealth, army. Ps 18:1-2 David says the same: “I will love You, O LORD, my strength.”
Point: Habakkuk’s circumstances are weak Hab 3:17 “no herd in the stalls.” But his God is not absent Isa 40:29 “He gives power to the weak.” When you have nothing left, God is your something
2 Cor 12:9 “My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
“He will make my feet like deer’s feet”
Deer’s feet — Hebrew ka’ayaloth = like hinds, female deer. Why hinds? Sure-footed — Mountain deer walk cliffs where predators can’t go Ps 18:33.
They don’t slip Ps 121:3. Fast — 2 Sam 22:34 “He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places.” Same phrase David used after being delivered from Saul. Graceful under pressure — Deer don’t panic on heights. They’re built for it.
Point: God doesn’t just remove the mountains. He gives you feet to climate up the mountain Isa 40:31 “they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” The trial stays. You change Phil 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
“And He will make me walk on my high hills”
High hills — Hebrew bamothai = my heights, my elevated places. Two meanings: Literal danger — Judah’s hills would be invaded by Babylon Hab 1:6. High places = battle ground, exposed, scary Hab 3:16. Yet God says “you’ll walk there,” not hide.
Spiritual victory — High places = places of worship Deut 32:13, places of perspective Isa 33:16, places of authority Deut 33:29. He will make me walk — God enables it. You don’t climb in your strength Zech 4:6 “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit."
Point: The same mountains you dread become your testimony ground Gen 22:14 “On the mountain of the LORD it shall be provided.” God turns your battlefield into a vantage point Ps 23:5 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
Admit weakness — “The LORD God is my strength” starts with “I have none” John 15:5. Ask for deer’s feet — Ps 18:33 is a prayer. “God, make me stable where I’m slipping.”
Jude 1:24 “Him who is able to keep you from stumbling.” Face your high hills — Don’t avoid the hard place. God will make you walk, not fly away John 17:15. Your “high hills” might be: chemo, bankruptcy, prodigal child, depression,etc.
Bottom line: Habakkuk 3:19 is faith with hiking boots on. Everything in Hab 3:17 can fail — crops, livestock, economy — and still the prophet says: “My God is my strength. He’ll give me agility to climate this cliff. He’ll make this dangerous place my platform.”
2 Cor 4:8-9 — “We are hard-pressed… perplexed… persecuted… struck down, but not destroyed.” Why? Because “The LORD God is my strength.
"What are your “high hills” right now?
The verse promises: you won’t just survive them. He’ll make you walk on them — steadily, gracefully, like a deer. Isa 52:7 “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings great news.

PEAK HEAT IN EUROPE JUST BROKE HISTORIC 1970's RECORDS
“In the 50 years since the historic heatwave in 1976, Europe as a whole has warmed by around two degrees. It’s the fastest warming continent, and extremes of temperature have increased too.”
The heat spikes are being driven by the highest sea surface temperatures on record for June, according to the monthly update from the continent’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.
Globally, the monthly average sea-surface temperature for the extra-polar ocean (60°S-60°N) was the highest for June, exceeding the previous record set in June 2024 by just 0.01ºC, partly reflecting the development of strong El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific, according to the service.
Death, drought and fires
The record-breaking heatwave has contributed to severe health impacts, including heat-related deaths.
Europe also saw widespread dryness that, together with extreme heat, contributed to wildfire activity and heightened drought risk in parts of eastern Europe.
The heat in parts of Western Europe is continuing in July, accompanied by localised violent storms and in some areas by worsening drought and the risk of wildfires, including in France and the Iberian Peninsula, according to WMO.
‘Silent killer’
Heat stress occurs when the body gains more heat than it can release, and extreme heat is often called the “silent killer”, remaining under-reported in many countries.
More than 200,000 heat-related deaths occurred in Europe over the past four years, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Globally, WMO estimates there were approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths annually between 2000 and 2019.
Lachlan McIver, a health adviser at the WHO-WMO Climate and Health Joint Office, said most at risk are older adults, young children, pregnant women, outdoor workers and people unhoused or living with chronic illness, but heat stress can affect anyone when temperatures are extreme enough for long enough.
More ‘tropical’ nights
It’s not just daytime temperatures, but also overnight minimum temperatures.
A “tropical night”, a term widely adopted in some regions such as Europe and parts of Asia, occurs when the temperature does not drop below 20°C. During heatwaves, these become increasingly common, particularly in cities.
“When assessing the health impact of a heatwave, minimum temperatures can be more telling than the peak afternoon high,” said Armel Castellan, an extreme heat services technical advisor at the WMO-WHO Climate and Health Joint Office.
“A day that reaches 38°C but drops to 18°C overnight is very different from a day that reaches 36°C and stays above 25°C through the night. The second scenario carries a much higher health risk.”
Heat actions plans
WMO is one of 10 specialised UN entities supporting the Secretary-General’s Call to Action on Extreme Heat, an initiative that seeks to strengthen international cooperation and reduce heat impacts through improved science, early warning systems, public awareness and coordinated action.
The UN weather agency, its members and partners are mobilising with early warnings and coordinated action plans to try to save lives and inform decision making on how to minimise economic and ecosystem damage and disruption to infrastructure and labour productivity.
In a bid to help nations and communities cope with extreme temperatures, the UN health and weather agencies this week launched updated heat-health action guidance.
